I recently re-read The Purpose-Driven Life by Rick Warren. His over-arching message is that everyone is on this Earth for a certain purpose or reason. If there wasn’t a specific need for you, you wouldn’t be here. If you look at every other human on the planet through that lens, it will blow your mind.

Once you get past the incredulous feeling of how special you really are, he lays out several steps you should take to find your God-given purpose. These are certainly worth reviewing.

One of the key steps to finding your purpose is to identify and use your talents. Find out what you are good at and spend more time doing those activities than doing things that you are not good at, that stress you out, or make you unhappy. When you are doing what you are meant to do, it should be easy and fulfilling.

Another step you should be actively pursuing is to respect and connect with the environment. Mother Nature is God in action so make a deliberate effort to get outside, get your hands and feet dirty, and do what you can to protect the planet.

Step number 3 is to become a servant. Always be helping others. Seek out ways to serve. And on the flip side, be willing to let others help you. Don’t try to live life alone. Find a community to serve and let them serve you. It’s always a good idea to keep learning and growing. Working on yourself and self-improvement will always pay dividends. Do not neglect your mind, body or soul.

Having goals is an important component of finding your purpose. You should always be looking forward, in a positive manner, toward a goal that excites you and motivates you. If you can make your goals SMART (specific, measurable, action-oriented, realistic, and time-bound) and review them on a regular basis, you’ll set yourself up for success.

And finally, always challenge yourself to be better than yesterday. Find ways to improve every day. Your purpose will always require you to continue moving and growing. No one’s purpose is stagnant. It requires nurturing and growth.
