Understand and Acknowledge How Much Power You Have
Every choice you’ve made up until this moment has brought you to this point in your life. Even if someone else’s actions have played a part, your choice of how to respond to their action has brought you to this point.
Many of us feel powerless to change the direction of our lives. We feel constrained by age, geography, finances, education level, family obligations, jobs and more.
So I challenge you to a writing exercise (and a mindset one):
If time, money and family obligations were not an issue, I would ________________________.
Take a paragraph to answer. Or take 10 pages. Think about what you would do if you could have any life you wanted.
I thought about this recently and came to some realizations:
- I would live somewhere else.
- I would go back to college and finish my degree.
- I would write more.
- I would choose a career path that would make me happier and more fulfilled.
- I would take more risks.
So, I sold my home and moved 1,000 miles away. To a place where I had vacationed but hadn’t lived before. It was scary. No doubt about that. But it was empowering to realize that I could control my future by giving myself permission to make changes. Bold changes. Risky changes.
You have that power as well. Don’t walk a path that has been chosen for you. Forge ahead. Clear your own path. Let your soul lead you.
Never let the words, “I can’t because…” be a part of your vocabulary ever again.
